I Finally Have a Plan to Fight My Cancer

As you know, I have been going to Sloan Kettering for treatment of my carcinoid cancer. I am stage 4 and I have been taking Sandostatin Shots as my only form of treatment until recently. I have become increasingly uneasy with this treatment because I have been reading that it really is a poor treatment for controlling the growth of my cancer when used alone. For some reason, the last few doctors have recommended this as my only treatment and nothing else. See my post “My Third Sandostatin Shot” if you would like to read more.

As you might be aware, I have started to wonder if I am getting the best of medical care that I could get. To be honest, I really don’t think I am. Well, that is until now. I finally have a plan to fight my cancer.

So, with all of that being said, I decided to seek a second opinion….no wait…third Opin…no…a fourth opinion. Yup, bad patient. I didn’t just accept what was handed out to me without question. Bad…very bad. ๐Ÿ™‚ So, as a result of my efforts to seek another opinion, I have had my tumors tested to see which medicines would work best in treating my disease. As it turns out, one of them is called Capecitabine. The brand name isย Xeloda (you can click the name to read more). Here is a quick video about the drug. It is a form of chemo. To be honest, it’s a bit above me but I will research it and I hope come to understand how it works. I put it here for your reference.

I will tell you what I have gleaned from watching the video a few times. Xeloda, or Capecitabine, is taken orally and matabolized internally by the liver where it is converted into other chemical compounds eventually becoming 5-fluorouracil (5-fu). This is a form of chemotherapy. It is used for breast cancer and colon cancers which are, interestingly enough, part of the endocrine system.

It affects cells that are in the cell division phase and inhibits DNA synthesis thus causing cell death in the cancer tumor. Continued cell death can lead to the tumor shrinking in size. Also, because it needs a cell that is in the phase where it is dividing and multiplying, the drug levels must be maintained for a period of time that is long enough to affect cells not yet in the cell division phase at the moment but will be soon. When measured after treatment, the 5-fu levels are much higher in cancer cells than healthy tissue surrounding the tumor because Xeloda is only activated by certain (unpronounceable) chemicals found in cancer cells. So, it seems that it is targeting cancer cells directly.

I have also found a video regarding side effects of Xeloda. It’s a bit hard to watch but here it is.

Finally, there is a phase 2 clinical study that has just been completed where the Capecitabine (Xeloda) was paired with temozolomide.ย  They renamed the drug CAPTEM (capecitabine and temozolomide) for patients with neuroendocrine tumors. It was very effective but, I am not sure if it is available yet. Here is the video. This was a very interesting video.

So, I am very hopeful that this treatment will be effective for me. I must admit that I am afraid of the chemo. I guess I read too many health blogs that tell you not to choose chemo. Well, I am. I am choosing chemo and I have great hopes that it will work for me but, I am also going to augment that therapy with what I have been learning about fighting cancer naturally. If you have a moment say a quick prayer for my family. I have a little boy who is 6 and a wife that I love dearly. I’m not ready to go.

I hope that you find this post useful,

    • Hi Sandi, thanks so much! Iโ€™m not giving up on the B17โ€ฆ.and Iโ€™m trying to go vegetarianโ€ฆ..as much as possible. Thanks for the prayers too. God Bless!

  1. Ed,
Some food for thought on the alternative natural front (relatively low cost approaches):

Get your pH up to the alkaline level – lots of ways to do this. see cancertutor.com, and
Check out Aloe Arborescens – it is amazing for healing or helping to heal cancer in my opinion.
http://www.aloedecaus.com book – Cancer Cure that Worked
Detox your colon, liver and kidneys. Dr Schultz is a leader in this. http://www.herbdoc.com
Consider getting colonics from a hydrotherapist
Take powdered or liquid zeolite to remove toxins like heavy metals
Do you have root canals or cavitations in your mouth? Bill Henderson and others think
this is a major cause of most cancer if they are infected. You need to see a biological
dentist to get this checked and corrected. There is one I know of in NYC
Watch this video on Youtube. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jAgfDl3sJyQ Healing Cancer honestly
Tahebo Tea is great for naturally killing cancer cells – http://www.taheboteaclub.com
talk to the guy here. He is very helpful.
Habanero / Ginger cancer cure – this is an easy one as it is just food
    Check out kangan water
    Also check out Protandim supplements
Hulda Clark’s protocol for Parasites is critical to remove them.
Getting a zapper – Terminator2 is a good move as well.

All cancer is emotionally based as well. EFT or Emotion Code work can help.

Bill Henderson Protocol – see Bill’s site http://www.beating-cancer-gently.com he also has a great coaching service for only $ 200 for 6 months. His ebook is on http://www.cancerdefeated.com
Check out Artesiminin as a natural cancer chemotherapy
Check out http://www.ncrf.org Natural Cancer Research Foundation, they are in Long Island, NY
Their product Cellect has a great track record of success.

    Cancer is curable now, naturally.

    Best of luck,

  2. A few more ideas to ponder. Don’t try to choose or do one or two things on this list or whatever list of things you choose to consult with. Do a protocol of many different things to make sure that you are touching all the bases and correcting all the issues that could be causing your illness. Cancer and the tumor can be caused by a number of issues (toxic bacteria in the mouth, toxicity in the body, acidity of pH, emotional stress and shock, etc) and from this perspective, cancer is not the tumor. The tumor is just a symptom of a whole body deficiency and toxicity which is what is causing the tumor to come into being This is one of the differences in thinking between Alternative/Natural medicine and conventional medicine.

The other difference is that alternative medicine views all cancers in the body as fundamentally the same and can be treated using the same or similar methodologies. Carcinoid cancer can be treated the same way liver cancer or lung cancer or colon cancer is treated. Strengthen up your immune system, provide a gentle assist with natural cancer killing substances (ie Herbs), detox the body and let your body do it’s healing magic.

  7. Hi there. Eight years ago I was finally correctly diagnosed with carcinoid cancer in my lungs and pancreas. The largest tumor was 10.9 cm across, and all lobes of my lungs had tumors. Eight doctors told me to plan my funeral; there was nothing they could do. The ninth doctor (Dr. Richard Warner in New York) said to do radiation on the huge tumor, and then to takeCAPTEM. I was on it for 2.5 years. I now have only one tumor in my lung, which has been stable (at 2 cm) for six years. I work full time and have no side effects from the treatment. I share my story to give hope to other neuroendocrine cancer patients. Make sure you go to a neuroendocrine cancer SPECIALIST; normal cancer doctors do not know much about this kind of cancer. God bless you in your journey.

    • Hi Cindy, Thanks for your story. I am currently seeking opinions from specialists. Unfortunately, they are all far away from me. How did you coordinate with your local doctor? My local doctor has shown quite a bit of resistance to anything suggested by other doctors. Of course, I won’t let that stop me but I really want to keep my current doctor.

      • Hi Ed – My local onco was just really supportive and honest from the beginning, realizing the fact that neuroendocrine cancers are not like other cancers, and she encouraged me to go to all the experts I went to. She was pretty amazed that my tumors responded as well as they did also. Maybe it has to do with the fact that her husband is a genetisist, and he actually knew that this is a weird and very different disease than the fast growing kind of cancers. I hope your doctor realizes that too.

        • That’s great. I think when I do find something that my oncologist will give me the boot. Can they do that? I guess if he does that I wouldn’t want to go to him any how……his heart wouldn’t be in it.

          • My first oncologist did just that! Sooo glad I switched too. Some docs are really threatened if you imply that they don’t know it all. And with carcinoid, unless they specialized in it, they usually don’t know much about neuroendocrine cancers.

          • So frustrating! Do you have a blog? I like to read other blogs. ๐Ÿ™‚ Any how, I might be going to Nebraska for surgery with Dr. Vargas…also contacted Cancer Treatment Centers of America…..I’m not sure what they know. Have you heard anything?

          • I have heard that they do not have anyone who has very much knowledge or experience with neuroendocrine cancers, but that was a few years ago, so I could be 100% wrong now.

    • Finally…a USA connection for Carcinoid. I have been relying on UK info till now. Spprerciate someone hooking me up to a USA blog for Lung Carcinoid.
